Gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ in the abdomen. The liver secretes bile and the gallbladder collects it and releases it into the intestine as needed for the digestion of fatty foods. Sometimes bile collected in the gallbladder forms crystals. When these crystals move into the bile duct, the thin tube that carries bile to the intestine, they may block the duct leading to inflammation of gallbladder. This condition is called cholecystitis. Gallstones moving through the duct is extremely painful and a gallbladder inflammation is a serious condition.
Symptoms of gallstones:
Gallbladder inflammation can be cured by surgically removing the gallbladder.
Surgical removal of gallbladder called cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment to cure the condition.
Traditional cholecystectomy involves a large incision in the abdomen. Today laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers a minimally invasive way of removing the gallbladder.
Laparoscopic gallbladder removal.
During a laparoscopic gallbladder removal a few small incisions are made on the right side of the abdomen. A laparoscope is a thin tube with a light and a camera at the end. This is inserted through an incision and it transmits pictures to a screen. The abdomen may be inflated with carbon dioxide to make it easier to operate. Special surgical instruments are inserted through the incisions and the gallbladder is removed guided by the images on the screen.
